Glossary


Acupuncture - Ancient Chinese system based on needles placed at certain points on the body to release pain and stimulate a flow of life energy, known as qi or chi.

Acupressure - Healing art based on pressure points on the body stimulating the flow of life energy, using fingers instead of needles, with points similar to acupuncture.

Ayurveda - A 4,000-year-old Indian system based on mind/body types working with herbal therapy, meditation, diet and other therapies.

Body/Energy Work - Various methods/techniques involving physical touch and/or movement frequently combined with ways to improve the flow of life energy in the body­ Used for relaxation and to clear balance and release energy blocks. e.g., acupressure, craniosacral, massage, Reiki, reflexology, polarity, shiatsu, tai chi, yoga, etc.

Chiropractic - A practice of manipulating the spine to relieve pain and improve health.

Colonics - Cleansing of the large intestine using water irrigation to remove toxins and enhance the bodyıs self-healing mechanism. Gestalt Therapy - A growth therapy using counseling methods to expand awareness including the use of inner dialogue to resolve parts of the self toward an integrated whole.

Herbal Therapy - The use of plants in whole or in part for health and in treating illness. Used as teas, tinctures, powders, capsules, etc.

Homeopathy - A science of healing using small doses of natural elements to stimulate the bodyıs self-healing mechanism. Based on the principle that ³like heals like.² (see p. 20)

Hypnotherapy - Engendering a state of physical and mental relaxation applied to psychological issues.

Iridology - The science and art of detecting and diagnosing disease by the examination of the iris part of the eye.

Kinesiology - A system using muscle resistance testing to determine the bodyıs response to a substance or emotional issue.

Spiritual Healing - Healing practices that may include prayer, hands healing, meditation, spiritual counseling, and other methods for healing body, mind, and spirit.
